Microdiscectomy, also known as microdecompression, is a minimally invasive technique used to remove portions of a herniated disc in order to relieve pressure on the spinal nerve column. Spinal discs are small rubbery cushions that sit between each vertebrae. They are composed of a jelly-like center known as the nucleus that is surrounded by a tough outer layer known as the annulus. A herniated disc occurs when a tear in the annulus allows the nucleus to push outwards into the spinal canal. When a herniated disc applies pressure to a nearby nerve, this can cause pain, weakness, and numbness in an arm or leg. During a microdiscectomy, a small bone over the nerve root and any disc material under the nerve root are removed to free up pressure on the nerve.

Did You Know?

Although microdiscectomy is a type of spinal surgery, it is mainly used to improve leg pain rather than back pain. This is because a herniated disc in the lumbar spine can cause radiculopathy or sciatica in the leg as a result of nerve compression.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Am I a candidate for a microdiscectomy?

You may be a candidate for a microdiscectomy if you have a herniated disc in the lumbar region of your spine that is causing sciatica. However, most cases of sciatica will eventually resolve themselves within a few weeks without surgery. For this reason, surgery is generally recommended after you have experienced sciatica pain for at least 12 weeks. To find out if microdiscectomy is right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Pranay Patel at one of our South Bay, Los Angeles, Long Beach, or Manhattan Beach locations.

What can I expect when having microdiscectomy surgery at Ocean Spine with Dr. Pranay Patel?

You can expect your microdiscectomy to be performed at a hospital or surgical center under general anesthesia. Once you have been sedated, a small incision will be made in your back. A tubular retractor will be put into the incision and a series of tools will be passed through the retractor to remove the damaged herniated tissue. Once the procedure is complete, the tools and retractor will be removed and the area will be sutured, glued, or stapled shut.

What can I expect after having a microdiscectomy?

After your surgery, you will wake up in recovery where you will be monitored as the effects of the anesthesia wear off. In most cases, microdiscectomy is performed as an outpatient procedure meaning you will be discharged once you have fully woken up from anesthesia. In rare cases, an overnight stay may be required.

Most patients experience immediate sciatica pain relief and are able to walk within hours after their surgery. Since a minimally invasive surgical technique is used, most patients are able to return to most of their normal activities pretty quickly. However, it is important to follow any care instructions regarding medications, activity restrictions, and physical therapy exercises to ensure proper healing.
