At its most basic, the spine is little more than a set of bones set one atop the other in a singular line down the back. This collection of bones are held together and supported by a remarkably durable and elastic set of ligaments and muscles. Scoliosis and kyphosis refer to cases where the natural gentle curve of the spine moves out of its ideal position. Each term describes the manner in which the spine has moved out of alignment, and to a lesser degree, where this misalignment is taking place. What Are Scoliosis and Kyphosis?
As mentioned above, these terms describe a misalignment of the spine, with each referring to specific manifestations of misalignment. Scoliosis refers to cases where the spine has moved out of position in such a way that it appears curved like a C or S. Mild cases of scoliosis may go unnoticed by casual observers, while more severe cases may be clearly noticeable to any passerby. Visible symptoms of scoliosis are as follows:
• Shoulder blades that are uneven
• Hips that are uneven
• An uneven waist
• A back that leans to the side
• Head and pelvis not in vertical alignment
• A leg that appears to be longer than the other
Kyphosis describes a condition where the upper portion of the spine begins to curve, appearing to round over. This condition can often result in a ‘hunchback’ appearance. In mild cases, the patient may simply appear to be slouching; in more severe cases, the rounded portion of the back will be clearly abnormal. Testing for scoliosis is a common part of our school years, typically occurring before students move from primary school to Junior High. A second inspection is sometimes done a few years later to be certain no developmental issues have occurred since.
What Causes Scoliosis?
One frustrating aspect of treating this condition is that scoliosis tends to be idiopathic, or without discernible causes, in many cases. One well-known cause is the use of radiation in cancer treatment, leading to an increased risk that the muscles, bones, and soft tissues of the back will develop unevenly.
What Causes Kyphosis?
Like scoliosis, one of the known causes of kyphosis is receiving radiation treatment, typically for cancer. It can also result from the spinal ligaments becoming stretched, increasing the natural curve of the spine. One cause common to both conditions is neurofibromatosis. Patients who have been diagnosed with this condition show a higher incidence of either or both conditions.
